The Rio Grande River

Fly fishing for trout in Patagonia is one of the most outstanding and rewarding experiences that a fly angler can have. Because of its unique landscape, the solitude of the surroundings, the fine technique needed and the enormous trout you can find, many fishermen describe the Rio Grande as the ultimate experience in a fisherman’s career. This river is not for beginners as the wind can blow hard and in some pools long casts are required to reach the fish.

The river is the largest on the island of Tierra del Fuego and its reputation as the world best sea trout fishing is rarely disputed.

The mix of Sea Run Browns, Resident Browns and the occasional Rainbow trout makes this river a unique fishery. Every season huge Sea Run Browns enter the river with an average weight of ten pounds and some of them well over 20 pounds. You can also find numerous resident Browns that average 2 pounds but can grow to much bigger sizes. Later in the season some very healthy, chrome bright lake browns descend to enter the river from nearby lakes and they resemble the Sea trout in their size and color.
The water in the river, although darkened by the peat type soils on the island, runs clear for most of the year and requires a fine fishing technique to be successful. The river is only 30 meters wide so making long casts is not always a big concern. Each day you will have an exciting fishing opportunity to explore the more than 90 miles of river on the Estancia.
The weather is always changing so when you come, prepare for everything, as you will be at the amazing south end of the world.
There are 3 ways to reach the Lodge. You can first fly to Buenos Aires and spend a night visiting this beautiful city. The next morning you can fly from there to Rio Grande, Argentina where we will meet you and drive 3-4 hours to the Lodge.
Another option is to fly to Santiago, Chile and connect to Punta Arenas the same day. There are several flights per day making it easy to find a comfortable connection. Once in Punta Arenas there are many options to arrive at the Cameron. We can meet you there and drive 6 hours with a crossing of the historic Magellan Straight en route. Depending on weather and group size, charter flight options exist both to Porvenir (three hours from the Lodge) and Pampa Guanaco which is only twenty minutes away. Both Argentina and Chile now charge a one time entry fee of approximately $140 dollars US. This will need to be payed in cash at the airport.

There are two ways to arrive to the lodge. If you first arrive to Buenos Aires we recommend flying to Rio Grande city in Argentinian Tierra del Fuego. Aerolineas Argentinas has at least a couple of flights every day.
If you firs arrive to Santiago de Chile, we recommend taking a flight to Punta Arenas city. There are more than a dozen flights fron Santiago to Punta Arenas every day.
After landing in Punta Arenas or Rio Grande, the lodge takes care of everything. We can take our guests either by car or by chartered plane depending on the number of persons and the weather conditions. If posible, we suggest guests to take the Buenos Aires/Rio Grande route as it is at only one and a half hours by car to the lodge, instead of five if you arrive from Punta Arenas.
